Phage lab basics

When I visited the Wound Care Center in Lubbock, Texas in May 2007, I asked what are the basic pieces of equipment for a new phage lab. Lasha Gogokhia MD (a doctor from the Republic of Georgia) was very helpful and provided the answers. If you are interested in phage therapy for treating bacterial infections, including antibiotic-resistant infections such as MRSA or Pseudomonas aeruginosa, then I hope you will appreciate this simple list of essential equipment to get you started. Phage research - Warsaw, Poland

This slide presentation is an introduction to the phage research taking place in several locations in Warsaw - phage labs in universities, the Polish Academy of Science's Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics (Department of Microbial Biochemistry), the National Institute of Medicines and the Genetically Modified Organisms Lab. Equipment is shown such as Real time PCR, confocal microscopes, fluorescent microscopes and more genetic sequencers. There are also photos of the pathogens lab - with a notice "Only for Staphylococcus aureus" on the fridge, laminar air flow, a separate air supply and an obligatory UV (ultraviolet) lamp to ensure the room is not contaminated. The narrative describes the "hunt for new genes": looking far ahead, there is a huge perspective in finding new genes that encode proteins that will be useful for industry. This pioneering molecular science compares the genomes of different phages that are far more diverse than the range of mammalian genomes. Advancements in X-Ray Technology

X-Rays have been in use as a medical imaging technique since approximately 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen discovered that he was able to create photos of body structures like tissues and bones by passing electromagnetic waves through the body. He labeled the project "X" because he did not initially know the composition of the "rays". From that time forward, X-Rays have been the foundation upon which medical imaging technology and equipment for medical imaging have been constructed. Even though the X-Ray has long been a crucial tool for medical imaging, this approach has always had the down side that the photos created are not exact, which makes it so it requires extremely careful analysis and interpretation. Scientists have been researching for years in an attempt to find a way to make the radiographic images better. Recent breakthroughs in the growth of laser X-Ray's have led to advancements that have the potential to enhance the quality of radiographic images. The light generated by a laser would be very bright, so bright it could make distinct and strong contrasts on radiographic images. Furthermore, coupling the power of a laser beam with X-Rays can improve pictures by a multiple of about 1,000. Medical imaging at this level of resolution could provide the technology to detect cancers and other abnormalities that cannot now be detected with current X-Ray technology.
